Thinking about the Second World war, people tend to have simplistic explanations, ”the germans were special, they were authoritarians”,”their leader was mentally ill and led them to hell”. ”They hated the jews”, etc.
That’s why it’s interesting to read The Kindly Ones, novel by Jonathan Littell, who shows how ”normal”, and intellecually ”convincing” WAR and MASS KILLING was at that time.
The real pitfalls weren’t the sick hatred, but the seductive and wellmeaning idealism of war. The protagonist, Max Aue, is from the start of the war, a humanist, cultured and enthusiastic about the German mission.
Jonathan Littell shows how GREAT National socialism and COMMUNISM sounded in the beginning. Hundreds of thousands of people believed in the glory of violent, military action.
So! read the Kindly Ones closely, and take warning!

This time the nations have nuclear weapons, enough to destroy the planet.
Not a single soul could imagine the catastrophies of the First and the Second Worldwar (80 million dead).
